One of the great joys of backpacking is planning a trip.  We love to pore over maps, imagine or identify water sources, worry about the steep terrain, and dream of secret campsites with the perfect combination of privacy, scenery, and conditions. 


But it's still early in the season. Where can you go when the High Country is still snowy?


One idea is that instead of waiting impatiently for the snow to melt higher up, we can tackle some of the Forest Service roads early in the year, and still get quality time in the mountains. Or maybe just aim at lower elevations. Here are a few ideas:
