In addition to my volunteer work in Desolation Wilderness, I've been working with the great people at CSERC to help out around the Highway 108/120 corridor--Sonora Pass and Yosemite.

This last week I signed up for a crew to work at the Gargoyles, where we started to restore the guided nature walk there. If you haven't been to the Gargoyles, it's definitely worth a visit. Take the Herring Creek Road off HIghway 108 above Pinecrest and follow it for a few miles as it slowly deteriorates from nicely paved, to somewhat paved, to gravel. Not long after it turns to gravel, you'll see a sign marking access to the Gargoyles Tralhead Parking.

I know you'll see the sign there, because I put it there, with help from another volunteer, Bill; Chelsea from CSERC, and our lead ranger, Genie from the USFS. Digging post holes in this rocky ground was quite a task, but we hope the signs will stay up for years to come.

Yes, there were easier jobs than digging the post holes for these signs, but when I volunteer, I try to take on the work that others might not. We put up two signs--one for the trailhead parking, and another, larger sign that will hold a map and guide to the area. Other removed old markers from the nature trail and did some trail raking and outlining with rocks.
