May Lake

You may remember our hike to May Lake this summer with our daughter, during our camping trip to Yosemite. It wasn't our favorite hike, but the view from Mt. Hoffman is certainly among our favorites in the whole Sierra.

Today SF Gate ran a story about hiking to May Lake, which included some interesting notes.

  1. They noted that you could escape the crowds here. We would suggest that it is possible escape the crowds any time you hike more than a few hundred yards in Yosemite outside of the Valley itself. And we'd note that since May Lake is also home to one of the High Sierra Camps, it's one of the more populated points on a trail in Yosemite, But still.

  2. The writer didn't climb Mt. Hoffman, but suggested that the summit is only about an hour's hike from Mt.Hoffman. It took us far longer--but we're old. Then again, we do a lot of hiking. Don't be surprised if you mileage varies.

  3. Our favorite quote in the story is from another visitor, who says, “Despite it being a big national park, you feel one with nature.”

Seems like that's the whole point of national parks.

Still, it's nice that they're encouraging folks to get out on the trail. We do the same.
