A Solo Hike?

We got this question in our mailbox. And it's a good one. So it our answer, which we'll post in a couple of days.


"Hello,

Your site has lots of helpful advice.  I’m very worried because my 65yo husband, who hasn’t backpacked in 50 years (before that only once or twice if at all), wants to go on a solo hike in the high Sierra for 2 weeks in 2026.  He is in relatively good shape for a 65 yo, but has a terrible sense of direction and sometimes struggles with technology.  He has no compass or GPS skills and thinks all the trails are well marked.  The kids and I are extremely worried and have said that at the very least he needs to go with someone else, not solo.  I have suggested smaller coastal trails instead of the high Sierras.  What is your advice?
