We spend the holidays with our daughter in Tampa, which is a long way from any place that has a mountain--or even a hill. But we did take some time to get out and see the natural world there. It was rewarding: loads of birds, from egrets and herons to pelicans, osprey, storks, ibises, and spoonbills, just to name some of them.

And we saw other wildlife as well. On a cruise on Tampa Bay, we say both dolphins and manateers, and we took a few short hikes, where we saw white-tail deer and an armadillo or two--things we normally wouldn't see in our part of California.

Just goes to show that you can find good things to see, no matter where you are.
