Junipers!

The most wonderful trees in the Sierra? There are a lot candidates. Sequioas are the obvious choice, rightfully famous around the world for their towering canopies and massive trunks. And Sugar pines, with their huge cones, also get some votes.

But for me, the trees with the most character of all are the old junipers that live high on the granite ridges, exposed to the full strength of the winter winds, and struggling to find a way to grow in the solid rock beneath them.

Here are a few photos of some of our favorites--but you can find these throughout the Sierra. Take a minute to enjoy them, and listen to the story their tortured trunks tell.
