With the low snow levels in the Sierra this year, it's not too early to take your first backpacking trip of the year. But we have some suggestions: start with lower elevation trip to avoid much of the snow, and take a shorter trip that allows you to make a quick exit if you discover that you either forget a key piece of gear, or find out that something you stored over the winter no longer works the way its supposed to.
Not that we've ever had that experience...
And while you are at it, be careful. The news is full of stories right now of people getting injured or even dying in the wilderness.

>> Worry about the things that can kill you, (like water crossings and hypothermia) and try not to worry about those that probably won't (like pumas and rattlesnakes...and in the Sierra, bears): https://www.backpackthesierra.com/dangers-on-the-trail
Word from the Desolation Volunteers is that we are cleared to hike up to snow level, and that includes and ever-increasing area. If you see me on the trail. stop and say hello.
