Fall has officially arrived

Yep. Nights are as long as days...and that means less hiking time, colder temperatures, and more time in camp.

That's not a bad thing, but do pay attention to regulations. This is still prime fire season, as things are as dry as they will ever get. Please observe all regulations and restrictions, and make sure you know all the rules for backcountry campfires.

Campfires have been illegal in Desolation Wilderness since 1990, but we still find fire rings there every time we volunteer in the backcountry there.

And just in case you think these regulations are silly, or don't apply to you, take a few minutes to talk to some of the people who have cabins at Echo Lake. They'll set you straight in a few short sentences.
