Because I was out of the country when the certification workshops were held for the volunteers in Desolation WIlderness, I wasn't able to attend. So today I joined one other volunteer and sat through the mandatory training.

We learned everything that we needed to know to spend another summer hiking around Desolation Wilderness, answering questions, cleaning up TP, and trying to keep the trails in good shape.

It's a labor of love for me, but I also enjoy the feedback I get from people on the trails, They seem genuinely grateful, and say as much to me.

If you are interested, contact your local National Forest office. They probably have a volunteer program, and it's a great way to give back to Mother Nature. It's also a great way to get the big picture of what goes on in our National Forests.
