It's no way to run a country, but:

DW Volunteers are Exempt from Furlough

 Great news!

Effective immediately, we are back to our regular duty status, allowing us to be in DW.

The USFS has determined that we, Desolation Wilderness Volunteers, are in the “exempt” category from being “furloughed” during the government shutdown.

We are deemed to be “critical” to the protection of federal lands, as are certain staff in the Recreation and Public Service categories.

Many thanks to the management of both the Eldorado NF and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit for their follow-up during this difficult time and their consideration of our essential role and value in supporting the USFS mission of “protecting the land and serving the public.”

I look forward to seeing you on the trails during this final month of our 2025 season.
